Kyle Lewis Carter is a multiskilled designer based in Exeter who believes in thinking of the audience first and letting them speak throughout the design.

With fifteen years working in various branches of creative digital media, Kyle has learnt storytelling is at the heart of every piece. Each element adds to the story and all the tiny details impact on the audience’s impression.

From graphic design, film-making, animation, 3d modelling, and writing;
Kyle has never said no to a new challenge.

Graphic Design

MoD Royal Marines

The 4 years of work for the Royal Marines has been challenging, with quick turn-arounds and no budget.

Royalty free images online saved many designs from looking drab. Workflows were streamlined with templates to allow fast production. Communication had to be bold and it was important to never be cautious in questioning bad decisions, no matter the rank on their chest.

Carousel Calendars

Working with such a timeless product, Kyle has created calendars for world famous brands such as Kew Gardens, Betty Boop and RSPB.

Further work

Kyle’s design work isn’t limited to his day job. He has created posters for Exeter Drama Company, covers for writing anthologies and designs for his own creative endeavours.

Exeter Drama Company needed to show off its long-standing history within the city. Inspired by the decades of photography, the final poster is a maximalist’s dream.

Branding

Branding is an enticing niche and always a joy. Creativity is at the heart of every brand as a memorable design needs to stand out for the right reasons.

The design for the diversity group at King’s School Devon was inspired by representing humanity’s roots and the fruit that has grown along side us. The final logo and branding document will help keep their message bold for years to come.

Illustration

The majority of Kyle’s illustration work has been created for use in animation projects.

A distinctive style was created for the military representation in the Personnel Selection Board animation. It needed to be simple to make, allow diversity and not look too childish for the target audience. It was a success and won Kyle an end of year reward and plaudits from Navy Command.

Other illustration work has been various t-shirt designs for a YouTuber, personal art and other commercial projects.

Animation

Animation has all the strengths of video content, but with the added advantage of creative freedom.

For the Personnel Selection Board film above, animation was clearly the best fit as a video version could end up being dry and awkward. Kyle led a small but dedicated team to create a concise and informative animation.

Film Making

The power of audio and visuals cannot be understated. Films take us on journeys, no matter how short and, if done right, can have a profound impact.

Kyle is proud of the projects he has directed, from the initial stages to the final outcome, for the Royal Marines. Kyle has taken part in idea generation, storyboarding, camera work, editing and audio editing.

3D Modelling

3D modelling is a powerful tool and is something Kyle would love to explore further within his carreer.

He has created content for his day job and idents for YouTube content creators.

Kyle has also been working on designing a house using shipping containers; partly as a way to learn the program Blender, but he also aspires to create his building for real.

Writing

Kyle has been writing fiction for nearly ten years. He started with a novel (still a work in progress) and moved onto novellas and short stories.

His novella ‘Mindstate’ is out in the world searching for publication, ideally in a science-fiction magazine.

Kyle has also been working on a TV script that has won awards in screenwriting competitions.

Six years ago Kyle joined a writing group in Exeter, which he now co-leads. The River Exe Writers are going strong and together they have published an anthology, send out short story newsletters and written a film script.

They took the film script and ran with it. Kyle directed and edited ‘Frappuccino please, but can you hold the apocalypse?’ which was released in early 2021.
